Analysis of Mathematical Connections Ability Based on Cognitive Style

Abstract


This study aims to describe students’ mathematical connections ability in solving trigonometry problem based on Field-Independent (FI) and FieldDependent (FD) cognitive style. Cognitive style is the tendency of students in processing information and it greatly affects the performance in solving trigonometry problem. In order to do so, first, we develop and validated five trigonometry test problem. Then, 19 students were given Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT) to find each cognitive style. Next, four students were selected based on cognitive style representativeness. Finally, The analysis was carried out to answer the results of student tests. the data were analyzed to explain the students’ mathematical connections ability in solving trigonometry problem according to their cognitive style. The results show that subject FD cognitive style have difficulty solving the problem on several mathematical connections indicators. Meanwhile, subject FI cognitive style have not significant difficulties, it related to their cognitive style.
